AppleInsider | Closing the book on Apple’s Mac mini Annotated

R.I.P. Mac mini -- 2005-2007

Still, the mini has had its share of selling points. Due to its small footprint and low cost, it was immediately nominated by seasoned techies as the perfect media server for the living room. Some even went as far as installing the the tiny in their vehicles. But with the advent of , seems to have shoved the diminutive device into the far corner of what had already been a niche audience.

SPECULATION: 7 Predictions for WWDC 2007 by Apple Gazette Annotated

1 – Multi-Touch in Leopard – Leopard is going to be the main focus of WWDC this year, and I think one of the big surprises left in Leopard is the inclusion of the ’s Multi-touch navigation. Now, I’m not saying that is going to abandon the mouse at WWDC. Far from it, but I think Multi-touch will be included in the OS, and there will be some products there that support it.

2 – New GUI for OS X – We all know that the Aqua interface, while still quite nice, is getting a little long in the tooth. At WWDC expect the next generation GUI to be another secret of Leopard.

3 – New iLife w/ HD – The new versions of iLife will be revealed with Leopard – possibly even as a part of Leopard itself, and will all feature HD support…including HD downloads from .

4 – Blu-Ray Support – Blu-Ray support and playback in Leopard, and Blu-Ray drive options on all higher end Macs.

5 – Leopard/ integration – I don’t think we’ll be seeing too much about the at WWDC this year, but we will see how extensive the integration with Leopard is…and I expect it will be very much a part of Leopard. I don’t think it’s a co-incidence that WWDC is happening before the even comes out.

6 – New Minis and Macbook Pros – With the recent update of the Macbooks, the Macbook Pros are in desperate need of CPU upgrade, and the Minis are due as well. I expect to see new version of both products at WWDC if not before…

One More Thing…

7 – Ultra Portable iMac w/Multi touch screen – I don’t believe we’ll ever see an tablet (made by at least) but I think the time is right for a device like that to premiere.

last100 ≫ Blog Archive ≫ When will Steve Jobs open up the AppleTV?Annotated

In a recent financial call with analysts, ’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, was reported as saying “…we plan to periodically provide new software features and enhancements, at no charge, to our customers.”

So what might the future hold for the AppleTV? Rather than try and read the mind of CEO Steve Jobs, let’s look at a few of the hacks that have already been released or are in development.

Elgato Turbo.264: Say Goodbye to iSquint | MacApper Annotated

The thumbdrive style device plugs right into your , and quickly installs it’s codecs into QuickTime (which includes any app that uses QuickTime’s encoding). It includes four codecs, iPod (best), iPod (small), PSP, and AppleTV. OK, fine, it doesn’t encode at any user defined specification, but it does convert into the four most common, used, and wanted formats. If you’re not into using QuickTime to convert, Elgato includes their own app for converting videos.

The app can batch convert, gives a video preview of what it’s encoding at the moment, and shows estimated time left and frames per second. Speaking of FPS, the Turbo converted a DivX video of mine to iPod at 48 fps. Not bad at all compared to the 15-25 fps that QuickTime encodes at for me.
